Hans Georg Bock

Hans Georg Bock (born May 9, 1948 in Bottrop ) is a German professor of mathematics and computer science . From 2005 to 2016 he was managing director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where he was deputy director from 1993 to 2004. Bock is a member of the Committee for Developing Countries of the European Mathematicians Association (CDC-EMS) and is responsible for the Asia region.

Life

Bock studied mathematics with the minor subjects physics and biology at the University of Cologne . He completed his studies in 1975 with the diploma thesis "Numerical optimization of state-limited parameter-dependent processes with linear control using the multi-target method" under the supervision of Professor Roland Bulirsch .

From 1976 to 1981 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Bonn and then until 1982 at the DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen.

After working as a mathematical consultant in industry and research for several years, he returned to Bonn University as a researcher from 1985 to 1987. With the work "Boundary value problem methods for parameter identification in systems of nonlinear differential equations" , which he wrote under Jens Frehse and Roland Bulirsch , he received his doctorate from the mathematics and natural science faculty there in 1986.

This was followed by a visiting professorship for numerical mathematics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1987 to 1988 , before Bock accepted a call to a C3 professorship at the University of Augsburg in 1988 . Since 1991 he has held the C4 chair for software informatics and optimization at the University of Heidelberg.

From 2005 to 2016 he was managing director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, where he was deputy director from 1993 to 2004 and again from 2017.

research

Bock is the author or co-author of more than 180 scientific papers . In particular, these include advances in these areas

Teaching

Under the supervision of Hans Georg Bock, more than 70 diploma theses and over 30 doctoral theses have been completed so far . 13 of his students have so far accepted professorships at German and foreign universities .

Bock has been the spokesman for various graduate colleges of the German Research Foundation since 1992 and since November 2007 as the director of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computer-Aided Methods for Science (HGS MathComp) established as part of the Excellence Initiative through numerous innovations, such as the mentor system to provide a structured, internationally networked, interdisciplinary doctoral training deserved.

Prizes and awards

For his services to Vietnamese- German relations and the establishment of scientific high-performance computing in Vietnam, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Vietnamese Academy of Sciences and Technology in 2000 , the Medal of Merit from the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training in 2003, and the Honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 2009 .
