Christi matri rosarii

Christi matri rosarii , on prayer to the Mother of God in October and the call to peace are the opening words of Pope Paul VI's fourth encyclical . of September 15, 1966 on praying the rosary as a means of peace. The encyclical is the second and last in the series of five Marian letters from Pope Paul VI. (Three apostolic letters followed) and is subtitled Encyclical of the Pope on the Marian Prayer for Peace in October.

In the introduction, Paul VI. on the war raging in Southeast Asia: The danger of a serious and extensive emergency hangs over the human family and has increased, especially in parts of East Asia, where a bloody and hard-fought war was raging.

The rosary as a prayer for peace

In an hour of distress and uncertainty, the encyclical Christi matri rosarii was published so that supplications might be offered to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary to implore God for the highest good of peace . In the following October the rosary should therefore be said as a peace rosary, through which the help of the Mother of God should be implored.

The Pope called for a special prayer for peace on October 4, 1966, exactly one year after his visit to the United Nations. In 1967, Pope Paul VI. then January 1st of each year as World Day of Peace (first celebrated in 1968). Since the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council , January 1st has also been the solemn feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

The next significant Marian encyclical comes from Pope John Paul II and is called " Redemptoris mater " about the Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of the pilgrim church. It was published on March 25, 1987.
