Sacra propediem
The encyclical Sacra propediem , which Pope Benedict XV. on January 6, 1921, was about the Third Order of the Franciscans . The date of publication also reminds of the Franciscan order founded 700 years ago by Francis of Assisi . The Third Order of the Franciscans is now called Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis .
Occasion of the celebrations
"Many events prompt us to enter into the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the Third Order of the Franciscans," writes the Pope. He adds his own memories of his time in the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Aracoeli , saying that this high church was given to the Franciscans and is still available to the community today. He goes into detail again on the life's work of St. Francis of Assisi and his founding of the order. He attributes the establishment of the Third Order ( Tertiaris ) to Saint Francis, who already considered a third order in addition to the two other orders during his lifetime. With the Constitution "Misericors Dei Filius" of 1883 Pope Leo XIII. a new regulation of the Third Order put into effect and adapted to the new social and societal conditions.
To the "Third Order"
The Pope states that the Third Order exerts a great influence, which promotes Christian peace and whose help and social commitment work worldwide. It is therefore desirable that a “Tertiary of the Franciscans” should be founded in every city, they should promote Catholic connections and orient their work towards young people, workers and women. In this activity lies the great opportunity to promote peace and to realize charity . Benedict XV then develops new ideas and gives the mandate that the members of this Third Order should see themselves as a “Franciscan family”. "After all, it is a matter of opening the way back to Christ for as many people as possible through the imitation of St. Francis; the hope of the salvation of society is based primarily on this return." The overcoming of the social barriers between poverty and luxury is very important , the envy and hatred between the social classes must be broken down and new bridges should be built.
arrangement
During the celebrations, Pope Benedict XV. separate regulations, he attaches importance to the fact that the Third Orders in all churches must take place according to canon law and sets April 16 th. J. as the beginning of the celebrations. In addition, he stipulates that during this period of celebration, devotional items related to Saint Francis may be blessed by every priest .
