The bridge was demolished and replaced by a new building.

The Sauk Rapids Bridge was a 172-meter-long, twelve-meter-wide tensioned arch bridge in steel framework construction , which spanned the Mississippi River and connected the cities of St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids in the US state of Minnesota .

It was built in 1942 and designed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation . The bridge had three spans supported by two pillars. The structure, the maximum span of which was about 53 meters, crossed the Mississippi River about 700 meters below the rapids of the Sauk River. The river is still flowing fast at this point and the water is churned.

With the completion and commissioning of the Sauk Rapids Regional Bridge on October 23, 2007, the Sauk Rapids Bridge was closed to traffic. The demolition of the old bridge began in November.

After the collapse of the Interstate 35W Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis on August 1, 2007, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty ordered the Sauk Rapids Bridge to be inspected. No problems were found with the bridge, which had a construction principle similar to the one that collapsed.
