The Sauk Rapids Regional Bridge, or informally New Sauk Rapids Bridge to distinguish it from the old bridge in Sauk Rapids , Minnesota , is a newly constructed bridge over the Mississippi River in the United States . Construction began on September 26, 2005 and was completed in September 2007. The new bridge was opened to traffic on October 23rd and the official inauguration took place on November 16, 2007. It replaces the previously existing Sauk Rapids Bridge , which is a short stretch downstream and the demolition of which began in autumn 2007.
The new bridge essentially uses a steel structure instead of concrete to minimize the number of piers that have to stand in the river. Through this solution, additional costs were incurred in the amount of 2.3 million US dollars ; the total is expected to be $ 56.63 million, of which $ 20.46 million was construction costs. The rest was divided between the purchase of land, the construction of connecting roads and grants for businesses that were relocated in the course of the construction of the new bridge.
The new Mississippi Bridge eliminates a birth defect of the previous structure, which consisted in the fact that the Sauk Rapids Bridge was on the east bank of the river behind the BNSF Railway line and therefore traffic was often interrupted by the closed level crossing .
The design of the new road link has long been controversial between Benton County and the city of Sauk Rapids, and the matter was almost resolved in court. The county had requested that the bridge be built beyond Benton Drive, the main drag in Sauk Rapids, and the city council feared that such a solution would negatively affect business in the center. Ultimately, the decision-making authority over the project passed to the city and the city decided on the version in which the bridge arrives on Benton Drive and is connected to Second Street North.
