Haralambos "Babis" Stefanidis (born March 8, 1981 ) is a former Swedish football player of Greek descent. The midfielder played in Sweden, Greece and Denmark during his career.

Career

Career start in Sweden and Greece

Stefanidis started playing football at IF Brommapojkarna in the late 1980s . At the Stockholm club he went through the individual youth teams and made his debut in 1998 in the first team, which at the time took part in the third-class division 2 Östra Svealand . In several short appearances in the first half of the season, he contributed to the club's promotion to the second division. In the summer of the year, however, Stefanidis left the club prematurely and moved to Greece to Iraklis Thessaloniki . Here he played in the following years mainly in the youth team of the club, while he irregularly achieved in the Alpha Ethniki season.

In July 2001 Stefanidis initially returned to Sweden on loan and joined Djurgårdens IF in Allsvenskan . In the 4-3-3 system , he was regularly used as a substitute on the offensive flank, so that the club pulled the purchase option agreed in the loan agreement at the end of the 2001 season . In the following season he was involved in 24 of the 26 season games and was instrumental in winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish championship alongside Mikael Dorsin , Kim Källström , Andreas Johansson and Stefan Rehn, not least because of his four goals this season . On November 9th of the year he also played with the team in the cup final against local rivals AIK , at the beginning of extra time he was replaced by René Makondele and saw Louay Chanko's winning goal off the field. In the year after winning the double , he had finally established himself as a regular and was the focus of the Swedish U-21 national team . Although slowed down by minor injuries and illnesses over the course of the season, he helped defend the championship title.

In the summer of 2004, Stefanidis took part with the U-21 team at the U-21 European Championship held in Germany . At the side of Johan Elmander , Stefan Ishizaki , Fredrik Stenman and Markus Rosenberg , he reached the semi-finals as group winners ahead of Portugal , Germany and Switzerland . The game against the Serbian-Montenegrin youth team had to be decided in a penalty shootout , and he missed the decisive penalty. After a 2: 3 defeat in the game for third place against Portugal, he left with the national team without a medal.

Another move abroad and return to Sweden

Shortly after the tournament, the negotiations between Stefanidis and Djurgårdens IF about an extension of the contract, which expired at the end of 2004, failed, so the club wanted to give it up in the summer. After the player had agreed on the contractual terms with Brøndby IF , Djurgårdens IF also agreed to move to Denmark in mid-July of that year, where Stefanidis signed a three-year contract. At the side of Jonas Kamper , Thomas Kahlenberg , Morten Skoubo and Martin Retov he played regularly until the winter break, but lost his regular place in the spring. He was a substitute in the 4-2 win over the Norwegian club Tromsø IL in the subsequent group game of the Royal League 2004/05 in February 2005, he stayed until July of the year without any further competitive appearances for the club. Therefore, he left the club despite winning the championship and cup double after a season in the direction of Sweden.

On July 5, 2005, Stefanidis signed a two and a half year contract with Helsingborgs IF that ran until the end of 2007 . At the side of Christian Järdler , Peter Graulund , Andreas Dahl and Erik Wahlstedt , he established himself as a regular player and reached with the team at the end of the 2006 season in fourth place in the Royal League 2006/07 , where they were only eliminated in the semifinals.

In the summer of 2007, Stefanidis moved within the Allsvenskan to arch rivals Malmö FF , whereupon he was sharply criticized by supporters of his old club and even received death threats. By the end of the season, mer was used ten times. He broke his leg in a pre-season game with the club's U-21 youth team. As a result, he was out long-term and fought his way back to the squad through match practice in the U-21 team. In the summer of 2008, the club loaned him to Landskrona BoIS so that he could get match practice in the second-rate Superettan . By the end of the season he was a regular in the offensive area and reached eighth place in the table with the team.

In December 2009 Stefanidis returned to his hometown club IF Brommapojkarna. Under coach Kim Bergstrand regular player, he played with the team around Olof Guterstam , Pablo Piñones-Arce , Kim Odelius and Pär Asp against relegation to the Superettan. Despite a coach change - Roberth Björknesjö took over the management of the team in October - the club ended the season bottom of the table.
