Career start and twelve years of AIK

Bergstrand started playing football in his hometown at IFK Täby . After going through the individual youth teams there between 1974 and 1982, he moved to the youth department of the AIK within the greater Stockholm area . At the age of 18, under coach Rolf Zetterlund , he moved up to the men's squad during the 1986 season . On May 19 of that year he made his debut in the 1-0 away win against IF Elfsborg with a goal from Björn Kindlund in the starting line-up in the Allsvenskan , and in his second game in the following week he scored a 3-2 derby win against Djurgårdens IF . Although he scored a goal in the next derby two weeks later against Hammarby IF in a 4-0 win, he then remained without a goal and lost his regular place to Jari Niinimäki in the further course of the season .

In the following years, Bergstrand also missed out on playing permanently in the main lineup, as he often had to struggle with injury problems. In the summer of 1987 he briefly struggled with death when he was allergic to the anesthetic in connection with an appendix operation . Still, he played more than half of the games for the club over the years. Under coach Nils Andersson and his successor Sanny Åslund , the team around players like Mats Olausson , Jan Eriksson , Thomas Lundmark or Niclas Kindvall regularly only played in the back of the table. It was only after Tommy Söderberg was signed as a new coach before the start of the 1991 season that success returned to AIK. Although Bergstrand played on the side of Bernt Ljung , Peter Larsson , Pascal Simpson and Hans Eskilsson in 14 of the 18 season games in regular time, he was on the pitch in all ten games in the championship finals. There he finished the championship with the club as the last, in the national cup he remained despite the final after a 2-3 defeat against IFK Göteborg without a title win during the season.

Also in the following season Bergstrand was a regular player and contributed with two goals this season to return to the championship finals. As fourth in the regular season, the club had nine points behind leaders IFK Norrköping , who halved by taking over half of the points in the final round. In particular through the goals of Wadym Jewtuschenko and Krister Nordin, the team moved up in the table and ultimately fought a duel with the club from Norrköping for the title. In the direct encounter on the penultimate match day, he distinguished himself with an excellent performance and helped with a goal assist - the rebound after his overhead kick to the crossbar was used by Nordin for the second goal of AIK - to a 2-2 draw. In the final training for the game against Malmö FF on the last day of the match, he collided with Michael Borgqvist and tore a ligament in his knee. On crutches, he followed the 3-2 success of his team, which meant winning the title.

Although Bergstrand had missed most of the preparation in winter due to the injury, he was back in the AIK line- up at the beginning of the 1993 season . On May 12, he made history when he became the first player in the club's history to score five goals in a league game in a 9-3 win over IK Brage . This made him the second most successful goalscorer in the club's internal goalscorer list with eleven goals this season behind Dick Lidman , who scored 16 goals in the course of the season, but still only made it to third place in the championship. After another season, in which he finished sixth with two goals, the club decided to part with the player despite a contract that ran for another year.

Between first and third league

Bergstrand stayed within the greater Stockholm area and joined league rivals Hammarby IF. At the end of the 1995 season , however, he rose with his new team from the Allsvenskan. As a table runner-up of the northern season of the second division behind Västerås SK , he missed direct promotion with the club despite a 2-1 home success by a 1: 3 away defeat against Trelleborgs FF in the relegation games . The following year he dominated the second division season with the club and finally stood with the club in the first division season 1998 even temporarily in the title race, in which his old club AIK prevailed and he finished third with Hammarby IF.

Then Bergstrand moved on to the second division Nacka FF , with whom he could not qualify for the newly introduced Superettan as eleventh in the northern season. In the third division Division 2 Västra Svealand , he finished the following season with the club as runner-up behind BK Forward . First he took over as coach at the club in 2001, but when the club stopped playing in the course of the season due to financial problems, he joined league rivals IF Brommapojkarna . With the team he rose after two wins against IFK Luleå in the relegation to the Superettan. In the course of the second division season in 2002 , he came to 15 stakes and a second division before he ended his career.

Coaching career

Bergstrand moved to the coaching bench and took a coaching job at IF Brommapojkarna in the youth department. In 2006 he won the Swedish youth championship with the club's youngsters. After the team was relegated from the Allsvenskan at the end of the 2007 season , he was introduced as the new coach. Behind the Gothenburg clubs Örgryte IS and BK Häcken , he and the team around Kristoffer Nordfeldt , Joakim Runnemo and Kim Odelius took third place in the table in the second division season in 2008 . In the subsequent relegation games she prevailed against Ljungskile SK and placed in the subsequent first division season on a non-relegation place. During the 2010 season he slipped with his team in the relegation battle. In October of that year, the club management decided to change coach and replaced Bergstrand with Roberth Björknesjö . Even under his leadership, there was no success and the club was relegated from bottom of the table.

In November 2011, the third division IK Sirius Bergstrand signed as the new head coach. With the third division of Division 1 Norra in the previous year , he signed a contract that was valid until the end of 2013 and, given his coaching experience in the youth field, should also help set up a youth academy. Under his leadership, the team repeated the third place in the table at the end of 2012, with one point behind they missed the promotion to the second division behind Östersunds FK and BK Forward . As a champion of the northern relay of Division 1, he rose with the team in the Superettan the following year. After a sixth place in the table in the first season in the second highest league, he led them in the second division season 2015 to third place in the table, which meant participation in the relegation to Allsvenskan. After a 2-2 home draw and a 1-1 away draw against Falkenbergs FF , the club missed promotion to the top division of Sweden due to the away goals rule . In the following season, Bergstrand's team fought head-to-head with AFC United for the second division championship, in the end, when the points were equal, the goal difference was one goal better in favor of IK Sirius, the club rose over 40 years after relegation at the end of the season 1974 back in the Allsvenskan. There the team established itself in the middle of the table, so that in the summer of 2017 Bergstrand and his assistant Thomas Lagerlöf extended their contracts by three years.

After the end of the 2018 season , Bergstrand and Lagerlöf left IK Sirius and in November of that year joined league rivals Djurgårdens IF as head coaches with equal rights , with whom both signed three-year contracts.

Worth mentioning

Before he started working as a trainer at IF Brommapojkarna, Bergstrand worked full-time as a fire fighter and later as a sports instructor and consultant at the Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan .
