The Västerås SK (Västerås Sportklubb) is a Swedish sports club in Västerås . The founding date is January 29, 1904. The club's colors are green and white, the club's name is often abbreviated to VSK in the press.

Västerås SK FK

Västerås SK FK is the football division of Västerås SK. The first team has long been one of the regulars in the second Swedish division, which is now called Superettan , and played in the first Swedish division for four seasons, 1955/56, 1956/57, 1978 and 1997.

history

The first 50 years

The association was founded on January 29, 1904 at the request of young workers. The coat of arms was designed a little later by Karl Emil "Keo" Ohlsson , who was only 18 years old at the time , and who worked as a draftsman at the ASEA factory (now ABB ) in the working-class town of Västerås. The club previously used a five-pointed star as a logo. The white “double T” in the club's coat of arms is a simplified takeover of the Ave Maria monogram (made up of the letters A and M) from the city coat of arms of Västerås.

The first serious soccer team of the VSK consisted mainly of bandy players who switched to soccer in the summer. In 1928, the big city rival Västerås IK , who was one of the founding members of the first Swedish league, the Allsvenskan , was defeated for the first time after numerous attempts . In 1954 the VSK managed to get promoted to the Allsvenskan, while the Västerås IK only played lower class and left the second division for the last time in the 1960s. Today the VIK works together with the VSK in youth work. With the VSK, the VIK and the IFK Västerås , three always moderately successful football teams fought for decades in Västerås for the favor of the fans, sponsors and talents.

As in Uppsala , the bandy teams, especially the VSK, were always more important in Västerås. This partly explains why these two cities, which occupy fourth and fifth place in terms of population in Sweden, do not have adequately successful football clubs.

The first goal for the VSK in the Allsvenskan came in 1955 in a 2-2 win against Norrby IF Borås Ove Dansson . After two seasons, the VSK was back in second class in 1957, shortly afterwards it was passed through to the third division.

1975 to 2000: Establishment as a professional team

1975 Lennart "Liston" Söderberg took over the coaching position in Västerås and led the club from the depths of the third division back to the Allsvenskan in 1977, where however the direct relegation followed. The first national player from the ranks of the VSK was Stig Frederiksson in 1979 , who made his debut in Tbilisi in Sweden's 2-0 defeat by the USSR . Söderberg initiated the longest phase of the VSK in professional business to date, until 2005 the club only spent two seasons below the second division. In 1980 Söderberg left the VSK, but returned in 1985 for a one-year interlude.

1995 Söderberg took over the VSK again. With his authoritarian management style, he managed to lead the team to the Allsvenskan a second time for the 1997 season. But after just a few match days, the coach was released again. Under Bo Petersson the qualification for the relegation was successful, but the green-whites could not prevail against the BK Häcken.

2000 to 2015: relegation to third class

In 2004 Söderberg took over the coaching position at VSK one more time and for the last time, led the team to eighth place in the Superettan - and ended his career. In 2005 Västerås then rose under the player- coach Peter Markstedt in the third division.

After five seasons under coach Kalle Granath, he was promoted back to the Superettan for the 2011 season - and thus into professional business. Co-coach Granaths and later Acars and thus player -coach was Stefan Bärlin in 2010 . The tech-savvy attacking midfielder has been a fan favorite in Västerås since the 2004 season at the latest, when he was Superettan's top scorer with 23 goals. He returned to his home club VSK in 2008 after three years in Norway. In addition to the young player Filip Tronêt , who also played a dangerous role in attacking midfield , he was one of the VSK's nationally known profiles.

After the move to the new arena, the return to the Superettan and the contract extension with the ambitious coach Granath, who was courted by the competition, the hope arose in the club's environment before the 2011 season that the football department would now return to its long, constant history could build on in professional business. But after a disappointing start to the season, in which the team showed hardly any scoring danger without the long-term injured Tronet, coach Granath was dismissed on June 23, 2011. The team took only nine points from 13 games and lost all of the last four games before the dismissal.

Granath's successor was Erik Acar , who had previously coached the women's team at Gideonsbergs IF . Stefan Bärlin continued to work as an assistant coach, he was joined by the former VSK player and coach Peter Markstedt . The team could not prevent the direct relegation despite ever better results. The reasons given for this were the departure of key players during the season and the blatant weakness at home (the VSK only got 14 points in front of their own audience, just as many as away). After the season, Stefan Bärlin, who had initially switched to management, left the club.

Since 2015: promotion to the Superettan again

After several seasons in the lower midfield of the third division, most recently again under the direction of Peter Markstedt, the club signed the former Swedish international Johan Mjällby as manager in February 2016 . He had terminated his contract as assistant coach at Bolton Wanderers the previous fall for family reasons. The team was trained by the duo Leif Berg and Thomas Gabrielsson until 2017 . Then Tor-Arne Fredheim was signed as the new coach. Although he led the team to promotion to the Superettan - but had to leave the club again after massive criticism from the ranks of the players of his "unsustainable" management style. Mjällby had already left the club in December 2017 to become a trainer at Gefle IF .

After seven years in third division, the coaching duo Thomas Gabrielsson and Joacim Gunnarsson has been responsible for the second division team since summer 2018.
