Johan Mjällby (born February 9, 1971 in the Järfälla ) is a Swedish football player who is now working as a coach.

Club career

Career start in Sweden

Mjällby played tennis and football from 1976 in the youth of IK Bele . He decided to pursue a football career and in 1984 joined the youth team at AIK Solna .

When AIK won the championship in 1992, he was part of the squad. However, he refused to be awarded the gold medal because, in his opinion, he would not have contributed sufficiently to winning the title. In 1998 he became Swedish champion a second time and attracted international attention.

Success in Scotland

After the end of the season in November 1998, Mjallby signed a contract with Celtic Glasgow , which transferred about £ 1.2 million transfer fee for him. On his debut for Celtic in the Scottish Premier League , he celebrated a 5-1 win over arch rivals Glasgow Rangers .

In 2000 Mjällby celebrated his first title win in Scotland, in the final of the Scottish League Cup , FC Aberdeen were beaten 2-0. A year later the "Scottish Treble" was achieved when Celtic became champion, cup winner and winner of the Scottish League Cup.

The following year Mjällby played in the Champions League for the first time , but failed with the team as third in the group stage. In the same year the championship title could be defended.

In the 2002/03 season Celtic missed the qualification for the group stage of the Champions League and thus had to compete in the UEFA Cup . There the team around Mjällby reached the final against FC Porto , which Derlei decided in the 115th minute with a silver goal in favor of the Portuguese.

After he had been slowed down by injuries several times in the 2003/04 season, Mjallby decided against extending his contract with Celtic by one year.

One year of Spain

In summer 2004 Mjällby signed a contract with UD Levante, trained by Bernd Schuster . However, his injury problems, which appeared for the first time in Scotland, hardly allowed him to play, so he only stayed in Spain for a year.

End of career and coaching activity

Mjällby had been out of football for almost a year because of his injuries when he tried his comeback at AIK Solna. But on May 16, 2006 he had to end his professional career for good and switched to Rimbo IF in the amateur area, where he works as a player-coach. He also works as a television expert for the Swedish sports broadcaster Viasat Sport .

On March 25, 2010 Mjällby was assistant coach of Neil Lennon at his former play station Celtic when he inherited the dismissed Tony Mowbray .

National team

Mjällby made his debut for the Swedish national team on March 12, 1997 in the game against Israel . He played a total of 49 times for his country, scoring four goals. He participated in the 2002 World Cup and the 2000 and 2004 European Championships . In 2002 he succeeded Patrik Andersson as team captain of the selection and was replaced in this position in 2004 by Olof Mellberg .
