Västerås IK is a Swedish football club from Västerås . The team was one of the founding members of Allsvenskan in 1924 . Until their bankruptcy in 1999, the club also had an ice hockey department, which, after being re-established, plays in HockeyAllsvenskan under the name VIK Västerås HK .

Västerås IK was founded in 1913. In the 1924/25 season , the team was one of the first twelve teams in the newly founded Allsvenskan. However, the team was able to record only two wins during the season and rose with nine points as the bottom of the table from the league. In the Mellansvenska series , the central Swedish season of the second division, only managed third place behind Örebro SK and Hallstahammars SK . Also in the following season, the team behind IK City and local rivals IFK Västerås missed promotion . In 1928 the team had to relegate to the third division after only the penultimate place was occupied.

In the first season in the third division Västerås IK fought against relegation, but could get the class thanks to the better goal quotient. In the following season, however, it was enough to only two wins and one draw during the entire season: Västerås IK was relegated to the fourth division. In 1937 the club managed to return to the third division. In 1941, the runner-up behind local rivals Västerås SK, and the following year the club itself came first. In the promotion games, however, the club failed to IF Verdandi . After that, the club got more placements in the front part of the table, but it took until 1945 before the next time the first place was occupied. Against IF Vesta managed a draw and a home win and thus the return to the second division.

With a fifth place Västerås IK reported back in the second division. However, in 1948 it went back to the third division together with local rivals IFK Västerås. In the following years, the team became more and more the elevator team between the third and fourth leagues. In 1962, the team was promoted to the third division and in the following year the march through in division two, where, however, the immediate relegation was carried out. In 1967 it went back to the fourth division and the club began again as an elevator team to commute between the leagues at irregular intervals.

After Västerås IK only played fifth class at times, they were promoted again to Sweden’s fourth-highest division in 2000. In 2003 the team became champions there and returned to the third division. There the team escaped direct relegation only thanks to the better goal difference against Eskilstuna City . In 2005 the league system in Sweden was reformed and the club moved to the fourth division. He stayed there until he was relegated to fifth division at the end of the 2010 season.

The club has had a women's football division since 1988. However, the women's team has only played in lower leagues so far.
