Thomas Lagerlöf
Thomas Olof Lagerlöf (born November 15, 1971 in Österåker ) is a former Swedish football player who now works as a coach. As an active player, the defender and midfielder won five national titles with AIK .
Career
Lagerlöf began his club playing career in 1978 when he joined the youth team at IFK Österåker . After taking part in a youth tournament as a guest player for the Solna club in 1984 at the invitation of the AIK, the club brought him to its youth department in early 1985. Here he went through the youth teams and was brought into the first division squad for the first time in the 1990 season and was allowed to get first division season for the first time as a substitute in the 2-2 draw against Halmstads BK on September 2 in Halmstad's stadium Örjans vall . However, it was not until the 1992 season before he joined the Allsvenskan squad on a regular basis . Irregularly on the field, he contributed in nine games in regular time and seven games in the Mästerskapsserien to win the Von Rosens Cup for the Swedish national champions.
In the following season, Lagerlöf established himself alongside Gary Sundgren , Björn Kindlund and Peter Larsson as a regular in the AIK defensive line. He was also part of the squad in the play-offs for the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League against the Czech representative Sparta Prague , but was only in the starting line-up for the 1-0 first leg win and was in the second leg, which was a 2-0 defeat and the result Associated exit ended, ousted by Johan Mjällby . With the commitment of Hans Backe as a new coach for the 1994 season , he lost his regular place and fluctuated between starting line-up and bench. Even under his successor Erik Hamrén he was only second choice in the 1996 season and played only ten of the 26 season games. Nevertheless, in May of that year he started the final of the national cup alongside Magnus Hedman , Krister Nordin , Dick Lidman , Ola Andersson and Patrick Englund and thus - although replaced by Mattias Johansson in the 80th minute of the game - played for 1 : 0 success after extra time with a goal from Pascal Simpson and thus to win the title.
In 1997, Lagerlöf finally achieved his breakthrough at AIK, although the year began unhappily for him. After successes over KR Reykjavík and Olympique Nîmes, the team had reached the quarter-finals of the 1996/97 European Cup Winners' Cup and was able to win the European Cup for the first time in the club's history, where they met Spanish representatives FC Barcelona in March 1997 . In the first leg he was not used due to illness, in the second leg, which represented a respectable success against the eventual title winner with a 1-1 draw, he had to be replaced early after a knee injury. In the following season he played 21 games of the season and helped defend his title in the cup.
Even after a new coach change in early 1998 - the Englishman Stuart Baxter took over the training management - Lagerlöf was a regular on the defensive of AIK. But as a now defensive midfielder, he also showed his goal danger and scored three goals in the course of the 1998 season . With only 25 goals scored by the entire team in 26 games this season, he was instrumental in winning the national championship again. After winning the national cup for the third time with the club in the summer of 1999, he moved into the group stage with the team in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League after victories over the Belarusian representative Dnjapro Mahiljou and the Greek runner-up AEK Athens , where, after some unfortunate defeats against Arsenal , FC Barcelona and Fiorentina, she was eliminated from the bottom of the group with one point after a 0-0 draw at home in Råsundastadion against the Italian club.
Lagerlöf was also a pillar of the team in the following years, even if they could not confirm the success. In autumn 2001 there was an argument with the coach Olle Nordin . The club then decided that they would part ways at the end of the year. In December he decided after twelve years of Swedish first division football, in which he had played in 195 Allsvenskan games for AIK, to move abroad. After several international clubs showed interest, he joined the Norwegian club Lyn Oslo , which was then coached by Stuart Baxter.
In Norway, Lagerlöf could not prevail permanently and fluctuated between starting line-up and substitute bench. Therefore, he returned to Sweden in the summer of 2004 and joined IF Brommapojkarna . For the club he played as a regular in the Superettan . In the second division season in 2006 he was one of the pillars of the team with three goals this season, which rose to the Allsvenskan for the first time in the club's history. After playing 21 top division games for the club, he ended his active career at the end of 2007.
Lagerlöf returned to AIK in November 2007. As an assistant coach, he strengthened the traditional club's coaching team, as did Lee Baxter . After coach Rikard Norling was replaced by Mikael Stahre at the end of the 2008 season , he left the club and replaced the new AIK coach as head coach at his former club Väsby United . With the club he achieved relegation in the Superettan in his first season. When Mikael Stahre left AIK for Greece in spring 2010, he was briefly under discussion as AIK's successor.
In late 2011, Lagerlöf left Väsby United and joined third division IK Sirius as Kim Bergstrand's assistant coach .
