Louay Chanko (born November 29, 1979 ) is a Swedish former football player of Syrian-Aramaic descent. The midfielder played for both the Swedish and Syrian national teams on the soccer field.

Career

Adolescent years

Chanko started playing football at Södertälje FF before the midfielder moved to the youth team of Assyriska FF via the youth department of Syrianska FC . "Lolo" played there for a year and a half from January 1998 and then returned to Syrianska FC in the summer of 1999. As a 19-year-old, he played with the club's men's team in fourth-class Division 3 and was promoted to the third division at the end of the season. After another season in Division 2 Östra Svealand he was discovered by those in charge of the first division club Djurgårdens IF and, like Sharbel Touma , a talent from Syrianska, switched to "DIF".

Professional debut and first successes

At his new employer, Chanko made his professional debut on the first day of the 2001 season when he was substituted on for Mikael Dorsin in the 57th minute of the 0-0 draw against Trelleborgs FF . In the course of the season he commuted between the starting eleven and reserve bank, where he played the majority of his 20 appearances in the Allsvenskan as a substitute. At the end of the season he was on the side of Andreas Isaksson , Abgar Barsom and Stefan Rehn one point behind Hammarby IF Swedish runner-up. After the team was strengthened for the following season with Kim Källström and in the summer also Johan Elmander , the league was dominated in 2002 and won the Lennart Johansson Cup as Swedish champions with six points ahead of Malmö FF . In addition, the team played its way into the final of the Svenska Cup , where arch rivals AIK were opponents on November 9, 2002 . As a substitute in the 68th minute of play for Samuel Wowoah came on the field, Chanko scored his colors with a golden goal for a double in overtime after 99 minutes . Despite the title wins, Chanko decided to leave the club as he could not establish himself permanently as a regular player under coach Sören Åkeby in his two years at the club.

Second championship

Chanko moved within Sweden to league rivals Malmö FF. At the Schonen club he was given the number “10” on his back and was able to enter himself on the scorers list when he made his debut for MFF when he scored the first goal of the game in the opening match of the 2003 season , a 2-0 win over Örebro SK . After injuring himself in the following game and having to take a short break, he initially lost his place in the starting XI. It was only towards the end of July that coach Tom Prahl put him back in the regular formation. By the end of the season, he was on the starting line-up in most games and was ultimately used in eleven of his total of 21 season games in the starting line-up.

In the following season he was on the first day of the game in the 0-0 draw against Hammarby IF only on the bench before he was substituted on for Andreas Yngvesson . For the next games he qualified for the starting line-up and after each 5-1 successes over Örebro SK or at IF Elfsborg he had finally established himself in the team around Jon Inge Høiland , Afonso Alves , Patrik Andersson and Tobias Grahn and came in used in all 26 games. Although he did not score his own goal in the course of the season, with seven assists he still contributed to the 15th championship title of the southern Swedish football club. After another six months in the Allsvenskan, he left the MFF for southern Europe under controversial circumstances in August 2005: He had already completed training sessions at the Greek first division club AEK Athens without his previous club having been informed.

Experience abroad and return to Sweden

Chanko finally signed a contract with AEK Athens. At his new club he was used in the defensive midfield, although he had been used in his Swedish professional stations as an attacking midfielder or even as a hanging tip. His involvement in Greece was subsequently not crowned with success, only with a remarkable goal from 35 meters away in the local derby with Panathinaikos Athens did he attract attention.

After only one season, Chanko returned to Sweden in the summer of 2006 and went to Hammarby IF. There he signed a four-year contract. On match day 14, August 12, 2006, he made his debut in the Allsvenskan for the new club. In the 0-1 home defeat against Örgryte IS by a goal by Ailton Almeida shortly before the end of the game, he was substituted on in the 66th minute for Pablo Piñones-Arce . Until the end of the season he could not establish himself permanently in the starting line-up.

In his first full season in Sweden since returning from his interlude in Greece, Chanko made it into the starting line-up and was on the field of all of his 24 season appearances at kick-off. At the side of Sebastián Eguren , Suleyman Sleyman and Erkan Zengin , however, a European competition was missed with a sixth place in the league.

Two national teams in six months

Due to his good performances in the 2007 season, Chanko played himself in the circle of the Swedish national team and was appointed to the squad by national coach Lars Lagerbäck for a trip to America for a Swedish national selection consisting primarily of players from the Northern European leagues. On January 13, 2008 he made his debut in Jersey with the Swedish national colors when he was set up in the 1-0 win over Costa Rica by a goal from Samuel Holmén in the starting line-up. However, he was unable to establish himself in the Swedish national team, this use in a friendly game was the only time that he played for Sweden.

Despite various injuries, Chanko followed a request from the Syrian Association to play for Syria and was initially used in an unofficial game against a Syrian club in the Syrian national team. On June 2, the year he debuted officially in the national jersey of the Syrian selection than you as part of the qualification for the World Cup 2010 in Kuwait met. In the 2-4 defeat he was substituted on in the 69th minute. He was also in the starting line-up for the next few games, a 2-0 defeat against Iran and a 3-1 win over the United Arab Emirates .

Parallel to this curiosity - the appearance for the national teams of two different nations in a very short time - Chanko was able to assert himself in the regular formation at his club. Subsequently, in the summer of 2008, various European clubs such as Rosenborg BK , Getafe FC or Dynamo Moscow expressed interest in signing the midfielder. However, Chanko stayed in Sweden and reached ninth place in the table with his team. He turned down further inquiries from Belgium, the Netherlands and Turkey after the end of the 2008 season . Until the summer break in the following year, he held his regular place and scored one goal in twelve games.

Change to Denmark

On June 10th, 2009 Aalborg BK announced the engagement of Chankos, who received the number "6" on his back at his new employer . Here he met coach Magnus Pehrsson , with whom he had won the championship and cup double in Sweden at Djurgårdens IF at the beginning of the decade. At the side of Rasmus Würtz , Anders Due , Andreas Johansson and Kjetil Wæhler , he immediately played his way into the regular formation.

Return to Sweden

In spring 2012 Chanko returned to his youth club Syrianska FC.
