Jim DeMint

James Warren "Jim" DeMint (born September 2, 1951 in Greenville , South Carolina ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Republican Party , was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005 and was a member of the United States Senate for South Carolina from 2005 . On January 1, 2013, he resigned as a senator and became president of the Heritage Foundation , a conservative think tank . On May 2, 2017, after management problems emerged, he was unanimously dismissed from the Heritage Foundation's board of trustees as its president

Life

Jim DeMint graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in communications , from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1973 . In 1981 he received a Masters of Business Administration from Clemson University . He founded the marketing company DeMint Group in 1983 and remained its president until 1998.

Jim DeMint married Debbie Henderson in 1973, with whom he has four children. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America .

Political career

From 1999 to 2005 DeMint was a member of the US House of Representatives for the 4th  Congressional District of South Carolina. He had made an election promise to only hold this position for three terms, which is why he ran for the post of senator in the 2004 election. As of January 3, 2005, he was a Senator for South Carolina.

After his re-election in 2010, DeMint announced in December 2012 that he would step down as Senator in early 2013 to succeed Edwin Feulner as President of the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation . He had previously announced that he would be waiving a possible third term. South Carolina's Governor Nikki Haley named Congressman Tim Scott to succeed him .

Positions

According to a ranking by the National Journal , DeMint was the Senator with the most conservative voting behavior in 2007, and in 2008 he was ranked 5th. He is considered to be fiscal and socially conservative and strictly rejects any expansion of government spending. During the reigns of President Bush and Obama rejected it regularly spending increases, and also voted against the government rescue measures (English bailouts ) for banks and companies during the 2008 financial crisis .

He is a member of the Christian fundamentalist organization The Family and categorically rejects abortion, i. H. also after incest or rape and advocates school prayer.

After an attempted bombing of an airplane by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab on December 25, 2009, he criticized President Obama for downplaying the terrorist threat and still not nominating a new head of the Transportation Security Administration , but at the same time blocked the appeal of the Obama proposal Errol Southers in this position.
