James S. Cothran

James Sproull Cothran (born August 8, 1830 in Abbeville , South Carolina , †  December 5, 1897 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Cothran attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1852 at the University of Georgia in Athens . After studying law, he began working as a lawyer. During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Confederate States Army .

In 1876 and 1880, Cothran served as a prosecutor in the eighth judicial district of South Carolina. In the same district he worked as a judge between 1881 and 1886. Cothran was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1886 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded D. Wyatt Aiken on March 4, 1887 . After a re-election in 1888, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890, Cothran declined to run again. He died in New York on December 5, 1897.
