Abbeville is considered the start and end point of the American Civil War . On November 22, 1860 , a meeting was held in Abbeville at what is now called Secession Hill , at the end of which Jefferson Davis announced the withdrawal of South Carolina from the confederation. South Carolina was the first state to leave the Union. Shortly afterwards, other states followed, which eventually united to form the Confederate States of America and fought against the Union in the civil war.
