Clara Gooding McMillan (born August 17, 1894 in Brunson , Hampton County , South Carolina , †  November 8, 1976 in Barnwell , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1941 she represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clara Gooding attended the public schools of their homeland, the Confederate Home College in Charleston and the Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs ( North Carolina ). She later married Congressman Thomas S. McMillan . Like her husband, she was a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of her husband, she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the necessary by-election in the first constituency of South Carolina . There she ended her husband's last legislative term between November 7, 1939 and January 3, 1941. In 1940, she did not run for another term in Congress .

After that, McMillan was employed by the National Youth Administration in 1941 . After the American entry into World War II , she worked for the Office of War Information . Between 1946 and 1957, Clara McMillan worked for the State Department in the information sector. She then retired. Clara McMillan died in Barnwell in November 1976 and was buried next to her husband in Charleston.
