John Lanneau McMillan (born April 12, 1898 in Mullins , South Carolina , † September 3, 1979 in Florence , South Carolina) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

John McMillan was born on April 12, 1898 on a Marion County farm . He attended Mullins High School, the University of North Carolina , the University of South Carolina Law School and the National Law School in Washington, DC

McMillian was elected to the 76th Congress and re-elected to the sixteen subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1939 to January 3, 1973. He suffered a defeat when he tried to be reelected to the 93rd Congress in 1972 .

During his tenure in 1956 he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Furthermore, he was elected as a representative of the US Congress to represent it in the Interparliamentary Union in London in 1960 and in Tokyo in 1961. He also served as Chairman of the Committee on District of Columbia (79th, 81st, 82nd, and 84th through 92nd Congresses).

John Lanneau McMillan died on September 3, 1979 on his estate in Florence, South Carolina. He was buried in the McMillian Family Cemetery in Mullins.
