Joseph Bellinger

Joseph Bellinger (born 1773 in Ashepoo , Colleton County , Province of South Carolina , † January 10, 1830 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Bellinger was born on his family's plantation ; his exact date of birth is not known. He later became a planter on his own Aeolian Lawn plantation. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by President Thomas Jefferson . Between 1802 and 1809 Bellinger was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina , from 1810 to 1813 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1816 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from John J. Chappell on March 4, 1817 . Since he refused to run again in the elections of 1818, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1819 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Bellinger withdrew from politics. He died on January 10, 1830 in Charleston and was buried in the family cemetery at Ashepoo.
