Little is known about John Taylor. Neither his date of birth nor his place of birth are noted in the sources. The same applies to his place of death and the date of death. What is certain is that Taylor was politically active in South Carolina since 1802. He was a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1802 and 1805 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives .

In the 1814 congressional election, Taylor was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Elias Earle on March 4, 1815 . Since he lost to this in the subsequent elections in 1816, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1817 . Then Earle could resume his previous mandate.

In 1820, John Taylor competed unsuccessfully to return to the US House of Representatives. Then his track is lost again.
