Asbury Latimer

Asbury Churchwell Latimer (born July 31, 1851 in Lowndesville , Abbeville County , South Carolina , † February 20, 1908 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . The member of the Democratic Party was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1903 and was the US Senator for South Carolina from 1903 to 1908 .

Life

After attending public schools, Latimer worked in agriculture . In 1880 he moved to Belton , South Carolina, where he worked as a farmer.

Latimer represented South Carolina's 3rd Congressional District in its 53rd and four subsequent conventions (March 4, 1893 - March 3, 1903). He did not seek re-election in 1902 after becoming a candidate for the US Senate. From March 4, 1903 until his death on February 20, 1908, he served in the Senate for South Carolina.

During his tenure in the Senate, he became a member of the United States Immigration Commission in 1907 .

He died on February 20, 1908 in Washington at the age of 57 years to peritonitis and is on the cemetery buried by Belton.
