John LM Irby
John Laurens Manning Irby (born September 10, 1854 in Laurens , Laurens County , South Carolina , † December 9, 1900 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of South Carolina in the US Senate .
John Irby was the son of James Irby (1793-1860) who was from 1852 to 1854 Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. His great-grandfather Elias Earle sat several times in the United States House of Representatives between 1811 and 1821 . He first attended the Laurensville Male Academy . He continued his academic training from 1870 to 1871 at Princeton College in New Jersey and then graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville between 1871 and 1873 . Then he studied law, was inducted into the Bar in 1875 and practiced as a lawyer in Cheraw before returning to his hometown of Laurens. In 1877 he was named Lieutenant Colonel in the South Carolina Militia .
Irby had his first political mandate from 1886 to 1892 as a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina ; In 1890 he was the speaker of this parliamentary chamber. In the same year he was elected as a Democrat to the US Senate, where he succeeded Wade Hampton on March 4, 1891 . He served a full six-year term in Congress until March 3, 1897; he did not stand for re-election. During this time he chaired the Committee on Roads to the Coast. His successor in the Senate was his cousin Joseph H. Earle , who died after only two months in office. Irby applied in vain for his successor.
In 1895, John Irby was a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention. After leaving Congress, he no longer held any public office. He worked as a lawyer and in agriculture until his death in December 1900.
