George W. Dargan

George William Dargan (born May 11, 1841 in Darlington , South Carolina , †  June 29, 1898 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1891 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Dargan was a great-grandson of Lemuel Benton (1754-1818), who sat for South Carolina in the US House of Representatives between 1793 and 1799. He attended his homeland public schools and the South Carolina Military Academy. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1872, he began to practice in Darlington in his new profession.

Politically, Dargan became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1877 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. In 1880 he served as a district attorney in the fourth judicial district of South Carolina. In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the re-established sixth constituency of South Carolina . There he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1883. After three re-elections he was able to complete four consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 .

In 1890 Dargan declined to run again. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer in Darlington. He died there on June 29, 1898.
