Henry L. Pinckney

Henry Laurens Pinckney (born September 24, 1794 in Charleston , South Carolina , † February 3, 1863 there ) was an American politician .

Life

Pinckney was born in Charleston in 1794 to Charles Pinckney , who was the governor of South Carolina and the US senator for that state . He attended private schools and later studied law at South Carolina College (now known as the University of South Carolina ). He graduated in 1812 and was admitted to the bar. He then practiced as a lawyer in Charleston. Pinckney was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina from 1816 to 1832 . During this time he founded the Charleston Mercury in 1819 and was its sole publisher for 15 years . Pinckney served as Mayor of Charleston from 1830 to 1832.

Elected for the Nullifier Party in Congress , he represented the first constituency of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1833 to March 3, 1837. From 1837 to 1840 Pinckney again held the office of mayor of his native city from In 1841 he worked for the financial administration.

Pickney died in Charleston in 1863 and was buried in the Circular Congregational Church Burying Ground .
