history

Aerial view of the Bellefonte nuclear power plant

The Bellefonte nuclear power plant was planned since 1970. Approval was granted in 1974 and construction of units 1 and 2 began on September 1, 1974. The two 1263  MW reactors were to be built by Babcock-Brown Boveri Reaktor GmbH, a joint venture between Babcock & Wilcox and Brown, Boveri & Cie. , be built. However, construction was stopped in 1988 due to the falling energy demand. At that time, Unit 1 was around 88% complete and Unit 2 was 58% complete. The construction project remained in this state until 2005. The operator and owner TVA examined other uses of the site. On September 15, 2006, TVA canceled the building permit for blocks 1 and 2.

In the course of the American nuclear program, discussions began on October 30, 2007 about whether two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors should be built at the site , and the corresponding approval procedures were initiated. Furthermore, the building permits for blocks 1 and 2 should be re-applied for and these should be completed. The two reactors should be completed from 2011, so that the first reactor will generate electricity from 2017 and the second reactor from 2020/21.

Changed economic conditions led to a review of the plans in August 2008. In August 2011, the energy company TVA withdrew the plans for the four units and announced that it would only examine the option of completing one reactor. To this end, a study was commissioned to examine the region's energy needs for the next 20 years. On May 5, 2016, the TVA Board decided that the location was superfluous and would therefore be auctioned, including the infrastructure and assumption of the obligations resulting from the pollution by the buyer. The unfinished power plant was sold in November 2016 for USD 111 million to Nuclear Holdings LLC, which has the prospect of investing around USD 13 billion to complete the Bellefonte nuclear power plant and bring it online.
