Trojan in Rainier was the only nuclear power plant in Oregon . After sixteen years of operation, it was shut down by the operator Portland General Electric (PGE) almost twenty years before the official end of the term. The shutdown and demolition of the facility began in 1993 and was completed in 2008. Since then, Trojan has been the most powerful reactor in the world that has been completely dismantled.

reactor

It was a pressurized water reactor with a net electrical output of 1095  MWe and a gross output of 1155 MWe. The construction of the reactor cost 450 million US dollars.

business

Construction of Trojan began on February 1, 1970. The block first went critical on December 15, 1975. On December 23, 1975 it was first synchronized with the power grid. The commercial power operation began on May 20, 1976, with a 35-year license this would expire in 2011. The environmentalists demonstrated with violent clashes both inside and outside the security fence against the power plant.

In 1978 the power plant was shut down for nine months while changes were made to improve earthquake safety.

In 1980, a referendum decided not to build any more nuclear power plants in Oregon.

Shutdown

On November 9, 1992, the Trojan nuclear power plant was shut down. In January 1993, PGE announced that it would no longer operate the reactor.

The approximately 150 meter high cooling tower was blown up on May 21, 2006 at 7:00 a.m. by a dynamite explosion. This event marks the first implosion of a nuclear power plant cooling tower in the United States. Additional demolition work on the remaining buildings of the power plant was carried out by 2008.

Allegedly, the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant was the inspiration for the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Homer Simpson's workplace in the animated TV comedy series The Simpsons . However, Matt Groening's publicist denies this.
