The Beaver Valley nuclear power plant ( English Beaver Valley Nuclear Generating Station ) with two pressurized water reactors from Westinghouse is located in Shippingport in the US state of Pennsylvania , 54 km northwest of Pittsburgh . The Bruce Mansfield power plant is located a mile northeast of the plant, and the Shippingport nuclear power plant is not far from the power plant site .

history

The two reactors were built from 1970 and 1974 respectively. The blocks are operated by First Energy. Unit 1 went online on June 14, 1976 and Unit 2 on August 17, 1987.

Special occurrences

In October 2015, the facility made headlines for inappropriate employee behavior. First it was announced that a 'bored' employee had downloaded child pornographic material from children between the ages of 10 and 16 in hundreds of cases and had printed out 51 images. Shortly afterwards, it turned out that another employee had become suspicious of being drunk at work and had an alcohol level of less than 0.8 per mille during a screening.

In December 2016 it became known that Beaver Valley was also affected by the Creusot Forge scandal over falsified certificates. Both the lid of the reactor pressure vessel and the steam generator of reactor 1 come from the incriminated Areva subsidiary.

Future of the power plant

Since the 2010s, the plant has become increasingly unprofitable. Like many other nuclear power plants, Beaver Valley is no longer competitive because of the oversupply of cheap electricity due to shale gas extraction and the expansion of renewable energies in many electricity markets in the USA. A number of plants ( Crystal River , Kewaunee , San Onofre 2 and 3 , Vermont Yankee , Fort Calhoun , Oyster Creek ) have already been shut down for these reasons, further reactor units ( Pilgrim , Three Mile Island 1 , Indian Point 2 and 3 , Palisades , Diablo Canyon 1 and 2 ) are scheduled for shutdown, the premature shutdown of other systems ( Prairie Island , Duane Arnold ) is under discussion. New construction projects have been canceled; most recently, the construction of two blocks at the Virgil C. Summer nuclear power plant was canceled for economic reasons.

Due to this difficult market situation, FirstEnergy is campaigning intensively with the state governments of Ohio and Pennsylvania to subsidize its nuclear power plants. The systems are to be promoted with public money from budgets for the expansion of CO2- free energies based on the model of New York and Illinois . In these states, Exelon withdrew the announced decommissioning of a total of six reactors ( Quad Cities 1 and 2 , Clinton , Ginna , Nine Mile Point 1 , Fitzpatrick ) in 2016 after the respective governments agreed to subsidize the plants from funds for pollution-free energies . In New York, however, environmental initiatives are preparing a lawsuit against this subsidization of nuclear power plants. So far (as of February 2018), FirstEnergy's campaigns have not been successful in either of the two states. For months the company has been announcing that it will sell or shut down its nuclear power plants, which include Beaver Valley and Perry and Davis Besse , if the situation does not change soon. In Shippingport, in addition to Beaver Valley, the nearby Bruce Mansfield coal-fired power station is threatened with premature termination. The system also belongs to FirstEnergy and has been idle since 2016 due to the low electricity prices. As the company's CFO announced, it is unlikely that FirstEnergy will find a buyer for the two power plants in Shippingport. A shutdown is becoming increasingly likely.

In January 2018, it was announced that FirstEnergy was on the verge of bankruptcy and had agreed to finance a hedge fund of 2.5 billion US dollars for the next 18 months due to the financial inclination.

In March 2018, the operator informed the US Atomic Energy Agency that the power plant should be shut down in 2021. On April 25, 2018, FirstEnergy sent the nuclear regulatory authority the decommissioning dates for the reactors, according to which Block 1 should finally go offline on May 31, 2021 and Block 2 should follow on October 31, 2021.
