The decommissioned Crystal River nuclear power plant near Crystal River in Citrus County in Florida in the United States is the third block in the Crystal River power plant complex. Units 1 and 2 are coal units, Unit 3 is the nuclear reactor and Units 4 and 5 are coal units. The nuclear power plant is owned and operated by Progress Energy Inc.

The reactor / power

The Crystal River nuclear power plant consists of a pressurized water reactor . This has a net electrical output of 838  MW and a gross output of 890 MWe. It has two natural draft wet cooling towers .

Commissioning / shutdown

The construction of the power station block 3 of the power station complex started on September 25, 1968. The reactor became critical for the first time on January 14, 1977 . It was first synchronized with the power grid on January 30, 1977 and was in commercial power operation from March 13, 1977. On February 5, 2013, the operating company announced that the reactor, which had been shut down since September 2009, wanted to completely shut down and dismantle it. Instead, a gas power plant is to be built.
