The Peach Bottom nuclear power plant is located in Peach Bottom, 97 kilometers south of the city of Harrisburg on the west bank of the Susquehanna River and has a total of three units, the first of which was shut down in 1974.

history

Planning for the nuclear power plant began in 1959. Initially, only one block was planned, a helium-cooled high - temperature reactor . Construction of Unit 1 began on February 1, 1962. The reactor began operation on January 27, 1967 and went into commercial operation on June 1, 1967. After a short term of seven years, Unit 1 went offline on November 1, 1974.

In 1966, units 2 and 3 were planned. The construction of units 2 and 3 began together on January 31, 1968. Unit 2 started operations on February 18, 1974, Unit 3 on September 1, 1974. Unit 2 switched to commercial operation on July 5, 1974, Unit 3 followed on 23 December 1974. In both reactors is this is General Electric - boiling water reactors of the type GE BWR 4. The reactors each have a MARK-1 containment . The operating license for Unit 2 expires on August 8, 2033, and that of Unit 3 on July 2, 2034. The cost of the units was approximately $ 1.2 billion. Unit 3 of the nuclear power plant was the second highest annual production worldwide in 1980 .

The power plant employs around 600 workers. Labor costs are around $ 50 million annually. Exelon pays up to $ 1.3 million annually for local real estate.

After a three-month inspection of the nuclear power plant, major deficiencies in personnel were found. Several guards did their sleep while they worked. This was determined after the end of the test on September 25, 2007. A terrorist attack could take place during this time and thus put the facility in very great danger.

Operating license

In the USA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) grants an operating license for a nuclear power plant for a period of up to 40 years. The 40 year period was originally based on the fixed asset depreciation period . The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 allows the operating license to be extended (even several times) by 20 years at a time.

The original operating license for Block 2 was granted to the operator Exelon Generation Co., LLC on October 25, 1973 by the NRC. It was extended on May 7, 2003 to August 8, 2033.

The original permit for Block 3 was granted on July 2, 1974. It was extended on May 7, 2003 to July 2, 2034.

In September 2018, Exelon Generation Co. LLC applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a further extension of operations for Units 2 and 3 to 80 years each.
