The Dresden Generating Station ( English Dresden Nuclear Power Plant ) has three boiling water reactors . The plant is located in Morris in the State of Illinois on the outskirts of the agglomeration belt of Chicago .
To the north of the power plant is Dresden Island in the Illinois River . This island gave its name to the nearby dam and power station.
history
Construction of the power plant began on May 1, 1956. The plant began operation on April 15, 1960. Until then, Unit 1 was the only reactor in the power plant. In 1966 it was decided to build two more blocks. These were supposed to replace Block 1, which was to go offline in 1978. On April 13, 1970, Block 2 went into operation. Shortly afterwards, on July 22, 1971, Block 3 went into operation. In 1978 the first block went offline. Reactors 2 and 3 are expected to remain in operation until 2029 and 2031. The three reactors were built by General Electric .
Operating license
In the USA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) grants an operating license for a nuclear power plant for a period of up to 40 years. The 40 year period was originally based on the fixed asset depreciation period . The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 allows the operating license to be extended (even several times) by 20 years at a time.
An operating license for Block 2 was granted to the operator Exelon Generation Co., LLC on February 20, 1991 by the NRC. It was extended on October 28, 2004 to December 22, 2029.
The original permit for Block 3 was granted on January 12, 1971. It was extended on October 28, 2004 to January 12, 2031.
