The nuclear power plant FitzPatrick ( English Fitzpatrick Nuclear Generating Station ) with a boiling water reactor located in Scriba (New York) near Oswego in the State of New York on the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario . The Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant is located on the same site .
The reactor
Construction of the boiling water reactor of General Electric was on May 20, 1970. It is identical to the exploded reactor 1 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant . The reactor went into operation on February 1, 1975.
Debate about early shutdown
The power plant has been making losses for years and is not economical for the operator Entergy . The reason for this is the strong competition from high natural gas reserves due to the widespread fracking in the United States. Mark Cooper of Vermont Law School saw the power plant as barely competitive in his 2011 report.
In September 2015 it was announced that Entergy was considering, for economic reasons, whether it would make sense to refill the reactor with fuel in 2016. In November 2015, the company announced the shutdown, which was planned for January 27, 2017. Entergy did not make any demands about measures that would have prevented a shutdown.
Sale to Exelon
On August 9, 2016, electricity company Exelon announced that it was acquiring Fitzpatrick from Entergy for $ 110 million . Exelon has committed to supply Fitzpatrick with new fuel elements at the beginning of 2017 and to continue operating the power plant. This was preceded by an initiative by the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo , who campaigned for the preservation of the nuclear power plant. As a result, the New York state legislature decided to support the continued operation of the Ginna , Fitzpatrick and Nine Mile Point nuclear power plants with subsidies of nearly USD 500 million per year. In the meantime (as of February 2018) environmental groups are preparing a lawsuit against what they believe to be illegal subsidies for atomic energy in the state of New York.
