The McGuire nuclear power plant is located approximately 27 km northwest of the city of Charlotte in the US state of North Carolina and consists of two identical Westinghouse 4-loop pressurized water reactors . It draws its cooling water from Lake Norman , a reservoir created by damming the Catawba River . The two power plant blocks have a total electrical output of 2200 MW (net), their share in the nuclear power generation in the state of North Carolina is about 40%.
incident
On November 8, 2017, there was a transformer explosion on the site of the McGuire nuclear power plant , which resulted in a lot of smoke.
Ownership and naming
The McGuire nuclear power plant is owned by the Duke Power Company and operated by the Duke Energy Corporation . It is named after William McGuire, who was President of Duke Power from 1959 to 1971.
Term extension
The licenses to operate the systems originally expired on June 12, 2021 (Block 1) and March 3, 2023 (Block 2). On May 27, 2003, the NRC extended the operating license for both reactors by 20 years. This results in a new total operating time of 60 years per block.
Data of the reactor blocks
The McGuire nuclear power plant has two power plant blocks :
