The Waterford Nuclear Generating Station ( Engl. Waterford Steam Electric Station, Unit 3) with one of Combustion Engineering built pressurized water reactor is surrounded by a 12 km 2 large industrial zone next to the chemical complex Dow Chemical St. Charles Operations in Killona, Louisiana in St. Charles Parish , 35 km west of New Orleans , Louisiana.

history

Construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1974, and in 1985 it went into commercial operation.

While Hurricane Katrina devastated large areas of Louisiana in August 2005 , the reactor had to be shut down. Since the external power supply failed due to network fluctuations, the nuclear power plant was dependent on its own diesel generators for its own use.

Incidents

On October 9, 2015, the system's alarm sirens sounded. According to the operator, this happened as a result of a malfunction of the sirens, and at no time was there any danger to the population.
