The Braidwood nuclear power plant ( English Braidwood Nuclear Generation Station ) with two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors is located in Will County in the northeast of the US state Illinois .

history

The nuclear power plant has two reactor blocks, which were approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in May 2001 to increase their output by five percent each. The reactors have been operated by the energy supply company Exelon since the Commonwealth Edison company was taken over in 2000 and have a combined output of 2,453 megawatts. This makes the nuclear power plant the most powerful in the US state of Illinois.

In March 2006, several lawsuits were filed against Exelon and Commonwealth Edison for tritium releases into the local water system between 1996 and 2003.

Operating license

In the USA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) grants an operating license for a nuclear power plant for a period of up to 40 years. The 40 year period was originally based on the fixed asset depreciation period . The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 allows the operating license to be extended (even several times) by 20 years at a time.

The original operating license for Block 1 was granted to the operator Exelon Generation Co., LLC on July 2, 1987 by the NRC until October 17, 2026. It was extended on January 27, 2016 to October 17, 2046 Template: future / in 5 years.

The original permit for Block 2 was granted on May 20, 1988 until December 18, 2027. It was extended on January 27, 2016 to December 18, 2047 Template: future / in 5 years.
