The Lasalle nuclear power plant seven miles south of Ottawa , Illinois has two boiling water reactors . The owner and operator is Exelon Corporation .
Block 1
Unit 1 is a General Electric boiling water reactor with a net electrical output of 1118 MWe and a gross output of 1177 MWe. Construction began on September 10, 1973, it was synchronized with the power grid for the first time on September 4, 1982 and went into commercial operation on January 1, 1984.
Block 2
Unit 2 is also a General Electric boiling water reactor, but with an output of 1120 MWe net and 1179 MWe gross. Construction began on September 10, 1973, the first network synchronization took place on April 20, 1984, and it went into commercial operation on October 19, 1984.
Operating license
In the USA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) grants an operating license for a nuclear power plant for a period of up to 40 years. The 40 year period was originally based on the fixed asset depreciation period . The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 allows the operating license to be extended (even several times) by 20 years at a time.
The original operating license for Block 1 was granted to the operator Exelon Generation Co., LLC on April 17, 1982 by the NRC until April 17, 2022. The original permit for Block 2 was granted on December 16, 1983 until December 16, 2023.
