The Oconee Nuclear Station ( English Oconee Nuclear Station , abbreviation ONS ) is located on Lake Keowee near Seneca in South Carolina ( USA ) and has a net capacity totaling 2,538 megawatts.

technology

The Babcock & Wilcox steam generator in Barberton, Ohio before being transported to the Oconee Nuclear Power Plant (1970)

The nuclear power plant has three blocks with pressurized water reactors from Babcock & Wilcox , each with an output of 885 MW. Units 1 and 2 were put into operation in 1973 and Unit 3 in 1974. The plan is to take the refurbished blocks off the grid in 2034.

The pressurized water reactor is a 203.2 mm steel container with a weight of 660 t, which is protected by a 1.36 m thick reinforced concrete building. According to Spiegel.de, the emergency cooling systems in the reactors were never functional.
