The Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant 3.5 miles northeast of Burlington and north of New Strawn in Coffey County , Kansas, United States, about 55 miles south of the capital, Topeka , 90 miles southwest of Kansas City and 120 miles northeast of Wichita is the only nuclear power plant in Kansas.

The reactor

The nuclear power plant has a pressurized water reactor with a net electrical output of 1166  MWe . The reactor comes from Westinghouse and has four loops and a dry containment . It produces electricity to supply 800,000 houses. One megawatt can supply 800 homes in Kansas with electricity. By September 2008, the power plant had generated 10,369.136 million kilowatt hours of electricity. The capacity factor was 101.5%. The architect was the Bechtel Corporation .

history

Construction began on May 31, 1977. On June 12, 1985, the nuclear power plant was synchronized with the power grid for the first time and began commercial operation on September 3, 1985. The operating license issued on April 6, 1985 was due to expire on November 3, 2025. However, on September 27, 2006, the operator applied for an extension of the license by 20 years. It was extended in November 2008 to March 11, 2045. This marked the forty-ninth time that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) renewed the license of one of 104 commercial reactors in operation in the United States. The Wolf Creek Nuclear Corporation occasionally listed some alleged milestones in the profitability of its nuclear power plant on its homepage, including areas of the lowest production costs per megawatt hour and the longest operating times without shutdown.

Location and security

Due to the earthquake-prone situation, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission estimates the annual risk of an accident that could affect the reactor core at 1 in 55,556, according to a study. In 2008, Wolf Creek's main coolant line suffered from stress corrosion cracking , which led to a reassessment of the control of the loss of coolant accident in Swiss nuclear power plants.

The power plant can be seen many miles from Kansas Highway 75. The power plant is located on the Wolf Creek reservoir. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Learning Center is located near the power plant, which includes a control room simulator. The nuclear power plant is owned by Great Plains Energy Inc's Kansas City Power & Light (47 percent), Westar Energy Inc (47 percent) and Kansas Electric Power Cooperative Inc (6 percent). These owners together form the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCNOC) subsidiary . The WCNOC is responsible for accounting, among other things. The operator / licensee is also Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation. The nuclear power plant occupies 9,818 hectares of the 11,800 hectares controlled by the owner. The power plant was named after the lake on which it is located ( Wolf Creek Lake ). This lake also supplies the cooling water for the reactor.

In addition to generating electricity, the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant is also of economic importance to Coffey County and the state of Kansas.
