The Big Rock Point nuclear power plant ( English Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant ) in Charlevoix ( Michigan ) had a boiling water reactor from General Electric and a net electrical output of 67 MW. It was in operation from 1962 to 1997.

history

Big Rock Point was Michigan's first nuclear power plant. The reactor also produced 60 Co for the medical industry.

On January 7, 1971, a B-52 bomber crashed on a training flight with a live bomb load not far from the power station. All 9 crew members died in the crash in Lake Michigan.

Closure and shutdown

The power plant was shut down on August 29, 1997 at 10:33 a.m. (EST) before the license to operate expired in 2000.

The approximately 107-ton reactor was shipped to Barnwell on October 7, 2003.

The rest of the nuclear power plant was demolished. Except for eight containers with spent fuel elements, nothing reminds of the former power plant. The new owner of the Entergy site took over responsibility for the nuclear waste as part of the purchase of the Palisades nuclear power plant . The cost of decommissioning and demolishing the power plant was $ 390 million.
