The Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant ( english Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant ) located in Monticello , Minnesota in the United States , 40 kilometers northwest of the Twin Cities .

The nuclear power plant is owned by Xcel Energy Inc. or its subsidiary Northern States Power Company Minnesota . It is the second nuclear power plant in the US state of Minnesota , along with the Prairie Island nuclear power plant.

reactor

When reactor in Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant is a General Electric - boiling water reactor SWR-3 design with a gross electrical output of 600 MW and a net electric output of 572 MW for the establishment date. Retrieved February 13, 2013. The reactor has a Mark I containment .

The main contractor was the Bechtel Corporation . Monticello is a turnkey facility that first went critical in 1970 and went into commercial operation in 1971.

The power plant has two-row cell coolers .

In 2010 the reactor produced 4,695 gigawatt hours of electricity. The annual degree of utilization was thus 93.7%.

The power plant is located on the border between Sherburne and Wright Counties and is 850 hectares in size. The cooling water is taken from the Mississippi River .

The operator planned to increase the capacity of the plant from 585 to 656 megawatts. The first phase should be completed in 2009 and the second phase completed by 2011. Xcel's price estimates for the expansion ranged from $ 100 million to $ 135 million, but the actual cost exceeded initial estimates by more than $ 400 million. When the plant was shut down to fill it with new nuclear fuel in March 2013, the output was increased to 671 megawatts. However, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission ruled against full cost recovery of the renovation costs in 2015, which is why Xcel Energy reported a loss of more than $ 100 million in the first quarter of 2015.

history

Construction of the reactor began on June 19, 1967. On March 5, 1971, the reactor was first synchronized with the power grid. The reactor went into commercial operation on June 30, 1971.

From 2000, the power plant was operated by the Nuclear Management Company (NMC), a joint venture between a predecessor of Xcel Energy and other shareholders. With their exit in 2007, operations were transferred directly to Xcel Energy.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) renewed the power plant's operating license for another 20 years. The license extension was granted on March 16, 2005. The license is now valid until September 8, 2030. There was no environmental impact that would speak against a license renewal. The operator had shown that he is able to take effective action against the aging of the system. The original operating license would have expired on September 8, 2010.

Incidents

On November 19, 1971, a water reservoir overflowed. 190 m 3 of radioactively contaminated water got into the Mississippi. Radioactive substances also enter the St. Paul's downstream water system.

On January 17, 2007, the reactor was shut down indefinitely. A malfunction took place in a part of the plant where the pipes for superheated steam lead to a turbine. The turbine steam pressure dropped due to a problem with a weld. Company officials investigated the cause. Apparently improper welding was carried out during construction in the early 1970s. But material fatigue, which was triggered by vibrations, also played a role. Four other nuclear power plants in the northeastern part of the country with similar designs were checked to see if the same problem was present. Xcel assured that this incident had no impact on the electricity supply and the electricity price of its customers.

On September 11, 2008 at 10:47 am, the system was automatically shut down temporarily due to problems with the circuit breaker. There were no injuries, no radioactivity was released and there were no power problems.
