The River Bend nuclear power plant with a boiling water reactor built by General Electric is located in St. Francisville , Louisiana on the east bank of the Mississippi River .

history

Construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1977 and went into commercial operation in 1986. It belongs to the energy supplier Entergy . Original plans for a second reactor were abandoned in 1984.

In 2000 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a 5% increase in output, and in 2003 a further 1.7%.

The operating license issued will expire in 2025, an application for an extension of the operating license by 20 years has been announced by the operator and is expected for 2011.

Entergy planned to apply for a license for an Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor ( ESBWR ) at the site as part of the Nuclear Power 2010 program from 2008 , this is a further developed boiling water reactor from General Electric (Unit 3) . In 2009, the operator informed the nuclear regulatory authority that the plans for Unit 3 are currently no longer being pursued.
