The Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Plant is located about five miles northeast of Oswego, New York, on the shores of Lake Ontario in the United States . It consists of two reactor blocks. The Fitzpatrick nuclear power plant is located on the same 3.6 km 2 site . Since the shutdown of Oyster Creek on September 17, 2018, Nine Mile Point has been the oldest operating nuclear power plant in the United States.

owner

The first block was 100% owned by the Constellation Energy Group, the second block was owned by Constellation (82%) and Long Island Power Authority (18%).

Following the takeover of Constellation by Exelon , the current owner and operator is Exelon Generation Co., LLC .

The reactors

The first reactor block is a boiling water reactor with a net electrical output of 621  MWe and a gross output of 642 MWe. The second reactor block is also a boiling water reactor, but with a net output of 1135 MWe and a gross output of 1205 MWe.

Construction and commissioning

Construction of the first reactor block began on April 12, 1965; it became critical for the first time on September 5, 1969 . The block was first synchronized with the power grid on November 9, 1969 and went into commercial power operation on December 1, 1969.

Construction of Unit 2 began on June 24, 1974; it became critical for the first time on May 23, 1987. The block was first synchronized with the power grid on August 8, 1987 and went into commercial operation on March 11, 1988. Its construction cost was $ 8.5 billion.

The construction of a new reactor block of the EPR type with an output of 1600 MW at the Nine Mile Point location was discussed. The licenses for the construction should be obtained by September 2008. In November 2013 it was announced that the construction of the third block had been canceled.

Operating license

In the US, the operating permit is ( English license ) for a nuclear power plant by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission initially granted (NRC) for a period of up to 40 years. The 40 year period was originally based on the fixed asset depreciation period . The Atomic Energy Act of 1954 allows the operating license to be extended (even several times) by 20 years at a time.

The operating license for Unit 1 was granted to the operator at that time on December 26, 1974 by the NRC. It was extended on October 31, 2006 to August 22, 2029.

The original permit for Block 2 was granted on July 2, 1987. It was extended on October 31, 2006 to October 31, 2046.
