The Zion nuclear power plant was the third plant with twin reactors from the then energy supplier Commonwealth Edison . It provided power for Chicago and the northern Illinois district . The power plant was located on the far eastern part of the city of Zion , Lake County (Illinois) . This is about 40 miles north of Chicago as the crow flies and about 68 km south of Milwaukee .

The plant, now owned by Exelon , was shut down in February 1998, but operations were shut down in February 1997. At that time, an operator accidentally switched off reactor 1 and then tried to restart it without the necessary procedures. The reactor 2 was shut down at the time to replace the fuel elements . The main reason for the shutdown was supposedly an uneconomical operation.

The plant is in the process of being dismantled, which should be completed with the demolition of the reactor buildings in 2018.
