Entergy Corp. is a United States electric and gas company based in New Orleans , Louisiana . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index.
The company was founded by Harvey C. Couch in the early 20th century. From 1949 to 1989, there was a Middle South Utilities, Inc known.
The company was badly hit by the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Power plants
Entergy operates power plants with a total capacity of around 30 GW .
Nuclear power
Entergy is the second largest nuclear power producer of all electricity suppliers in the USA with approx. 10,000 megawatts after Exelon .
The company owns the following 9 nuclear power plants with 10 operating units:
- Arkansas One
- Grand Gulf
- River Bend
- Waterford 3
- Pilgrim (closure brought forward by June 1, 2019 at the latest)
- Fitzpatrick ( sold to Exelon in late 2016 )
- Indian Point (two reactor blocks; closures brought forward to April 2020 / April 2021)
- Vermont Yankee (closed December 29, 2014)
- Palisades (closure brought forward to October 1, 2018)
Nonetheless, the company's nuclear power division is economically and politically battered. Most reactors are affected or threatened by early decommissioning for various reasons. Despite its position as the second largest competitor in the nuclear power segment, the group is increasingly withdrawing from it:
- On December 29, 2014, the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant (a boiling water reactor) shut down after the operator announced this move on September 1, 2013. Economic considerations were given as the reason. The facility was in poor condition, had a tritium leak, was barely competitive, and faced strong headwinds from the Vermont state government .
- On November 2, 2015, the company stated that it did not intend to refuel the Fitzpatrick nuclear power plant (a boiling water reactor) in 2016. Instead, the company wanted to shut down the reactor on January 27, 2017. The plant suffered losses due to strong competition from shale gas electricity. After the state of New York decided to subsidize unprofitable nuclear power plants at the end of 2016, the electricity company Exelon, which operates the neighboring Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant, bought the nuclear power plant from Entergy. Exelon intends to continue operating the nuclear power plant in the future.
- On October 13, 2015, the company announced that it would shut down the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant (a boiling water reactor) on June 1, 2019 or an earlier date. The plant drove losses due to strong competition from shale gas and subsidized renewable energies , and its safety rating was downgraded to the second-lowest level by the US nuclear regulatory authority after incidents.
- In January 2017 it was announced that the two active units at the Indian Point nuclear power plant will also be prematurely shut down. Block 2 is supposed to go offline in April 2020, Block 3 on the other hand in April 2021. The nuclear power plant had previously been politically opposed for years by the government of the state of New York because of its proximity to New York City . Mohammed Atta was the attack on nuclear facilities considered and on 11 September 2001 with just flew over the plant before the plane into the north tower of the World Trade Center drew.
- In December 2016, Entergy announced that it would shut down the Palisades nuclear power plant on October 1, 2018. The reasons for this are the poor condition of the plant and its insufficient competitiveness. The shutdown was later postponed to spring 2022.
- Both units in the Arkansas One nuclear power plant (two pressurized water reactors) received the second worst safety rating on the authority's scale from the NRC due to a fatal accident in 2013. Together with the already mentioned Pilgrim plant, which was downgraded in 2015, they only rank one category above a state-ordered, compulsory shutdown.
- The Waterford , River Bend and Grand Gulf nuclear power plants , while not in the debate about early shutdown, are also potentially threatened for multiple reasons. All three plants consist of only one reactor block each, a circumstance that reduces the profitability of individual plants when there is strong competition on the electricity market. In addition, Waterford and River Bend were in the catchment area of Hurricane Katrina in 2009 . Since the impact of natural disasters on nuclear facilities has been the focus of debate since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, a political debate could arise at any time regarding the shutdown of these facilities.
