Lake Norman was 1959 to 1964 as part of the construction of the dam Cowans Ford Dam of the utility Duke Power created and is the largest man-made lake in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America . The lake is fed by the Catawba River and was named after the former Duke Power President Norman Cocke. The coastline is 867 km long and the surface is more than 80 km².

Lake Norman provides electricity to the Piedmont region of both the Carolinas, North and South Carolina . The hydropower plants and pumping stations in Cowans Ford supply the Marshall Steam Station and McGuire Nuclear Station with cooling water to cool their turbines. The lake provides drinking water to Lincoln County , Mooresville , Charlotte, and other Mecklenburg Counties such as Davidson and Huntersville .

Together with the State of North Carolina, Duke Power set up Lake Norman State Park on the shores of the lake , and two fishing grounds and eight moorings for boats were created on the shores of the lake. One side of the bank is administered by Mecklenburg County and the other by Iredell County , which have leased the areas . Popular fish species for sport fishing on the lake are mainly catfish and perch-like species . Lake Norman is also home to the sea monster "Normie" with many reported sightings.

The lake is of great importance for the economy of the region, many communities around the lake have built holiday resorts and residential complexes on the shore that attract many people. Many areas originally used for agriculture have been converted into residential areas, and Charlotte's suburban area extends to the southern end of the lake. The lake is also one of the venues for the International Jet Sport Boats Association (IJSBA) speedboat races . One of the racing teams responsible for the annual organization is based in Mooresville.

In November 2007, the basin of the Catawba River, like large parts of the southern states, suffered from an extreme drought with far-reaching consequences for the health of the main tributary of the lake.
