Beaufort (ˈboʊfɚt) is a small town in and at the same time the administrative seat of Carteret County in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America with 3771 inhabitants in 2000. The place was named after Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort , and is occasionally with the City of the same name in South Carolina confused, but they differ in pronunciation. Beaufort is the third oldest town in North Carolina after New Bern and Bath and is located in the Inner Banks region on the Atlantic coastal plain in the east of the state. On site is the North Carolina Maritime Museum and Duke University's marine biology laboratory , the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences .

According to the 2000 census, 3,771 people in 1,780 households and 1,048 families lived here. The population density is 531 inhabitants per km².
