Beaufort (ˈboʊfɚt) is a small town in and at the same time the administrative seat of Carteret County in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America with 3771 inhabitants in 2000. The place was named after Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort , and is occasionally with the City of the same name in South Carolina confused, but they differ in pronunciation. Beaufort is the third oldest town in North Carolina after New Bern and Bath and is located in the Inner Banks region on the Atlantic coastal plain in the east of the state. On site is the North Carolina Maritime Museum and Duke University's marine biology laboratory , the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences .

The small town covers an area of 9.2 square kilometers, of which 2.1 square kilometers, or 22.8%, are water surfaces.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 3,771 people in 1,780 households and 1,048 families lived here. The population density is 531 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is composed of 75.9% White, 20.0% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.4% from other races; around 1.2% said they came from two or more races. 3.8% of the population are Spanish or Latin Americans.
There are 1,780 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% of whom are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 35.5% consisted of single households and 15.6% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.65 people.
18.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3% between 18 and 24 years old, 27.9% between 25 and 44 years, 26.7% between 45 and 64, and 19.8% were 65 years old or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 83.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,763 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 39,429. Males had a median income of $ 30,859 versus $ 22,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,356. 16.6% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. 35.0% of them are children and adolescents under 18 years and 10.4% are 65 years or older.
