Bath is the oldest city in the state of North Carolina in the United States . It was founded in 1705 by the British explorer John Lawson and has a population of 275 (2000).
At the time of piracy in the Caribbean (16th to 18th centuries) it was an important point of contact for the pirate Blackbeard . This stood there under the protection of the then governor Charles Eden .
