Lake Norman State Park (formerly Duke Power State Park ) is a 5.4 square kilometer state park near the city of Troutman , Iredell County in the state of North Carolina in the southeastern United States . The park is located on the north shore of Lake Norman at the mouth of Hicks Creek and is very close to US Route 70 between Interstate 40 and Interstate 77 . The park is open all year round for those looking for relaxation and offers the use of boats, sport fishing , swimming, water skiing and camping . The park is administered by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources .

Lake Norman was created between 1959 and 1964 through the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by utility company Duke Power, is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina and is fed by the Catawba River . The lake was named after the former president of Duke Power Norman Cocke.

Lake Norman different life sun cichlid species , striped bass , sea bass and largemouth bass . Access to the lake is via a free boat ramp in the park, and rowing boats and canoes can be rented on site. A guarded stretch of beach about 115 meters long is available to visitors for swimming. Recreation area

In addition to the activities that are directly related to the use of the lake, such as swimming or rowing, other recreational facilities are also provided at Lake Norman State Park. The park is closed at night and is only opened to the people in it in emergencies.

Hiking trails

The Alder Trail is a three-mile loop trail that begins at Park Lake near the park entrance, passes the BBQ areas, and circles the peninsula between Norwood and Hicks Creek.

The Lake Shore Trail is a five-mile (5 mile) trail along the shoreline of Lake Norman.

The Itusi Trail is a nearly 11 kilometer route that is designed for use with mountain bikes and is maintained by a mountain bike association, the Tar Heel Trailblazers from Charlotte .

Wildlife

Although there is a wide range of fauna in the eastern forest area, most of the wildlife in the park is not seen by visitors.

Carolina ant

Frequently encountered mammals are the northern opossum , white-tailed deer , red and gray fox , cottontail rabbits , muskrats , raccoons and gray squirrels . Amphibians and reptiles live both in the forests and on the shores of the lake, various species of frogs, snakes and turtles are common. The main bird species in the park are carolin ant , wood warbler , falcon , turkey , osprey , mallard , Canada goose and heron .
