For the first time competitive as a tournament, the sport was held in the USA in 1864 . In 1923 the first tournament in Germany took place in Berlin .

In Gera , casting was even featured in school sports.

The casting sport was also represented at the World Games 2005 in Duisburg. So far the most successful female athlete with 67 (76) world championship titles and thus the most successful female athlete ever is Jana Maisel .

The casting sport is operated by the German Fishing Association (DAFV). The right to participate in further championships, such as qualifications and international tournaments, lies with the DAFV. This is affiliated to the International Casting Sport Federation (ICSF).

  • The German team was very successful at the 2008 Youth World Cup in Augsburg. Evgeni Demin won gold twice in Skish and Ahrenberg. Dirk Schönberg, Kathleen Ehrke in Fly Wide and Malte Krieger in Weight Wide also won gold.
  • At the youth world championship in 2009, the Swiss Melina Rüegg became world champion in the discipline fly target.

The typical competition disciplines are

  • Fly target: throw on a water basin with a diameter of 60 cm
  • Fly wide, one-handed
  • Weight precision: Throwing on a cloth disc (Arenberg disc) with an inner diameter of 75 cm, weight 7.5 grams
  • Weight goal: Throw on an inclined disc (Skish) with a diameter of 76 cm and a weight of 7.5 grams
  • Weight wide, one-handed: 7.5 grams weight
  • Fly wide, two-handed
  • Weight wide, two-handed: 18 grams weight
  • Multi target: Throw on inclined disc with a diameter of 76 cm and a weight of 18 grams
  • Multi wide, two-handed: 18 grams weight

A distinction is made between 3-fight, 5-fight, 7-fight and 9-fight. It is thrown according to the casting sport regulations of the CIPS.

In the target disciplines, a maximum of 100 points can be achieved, in the long throw disciplines the distances are decisive, which are multiplied by 1.5 for the weight types, whereas in the "fly" the two longest throws are added and count as points.

A modified, simplified form of casting is a sub-discipline of the versatility test (fishing), see Versatility test (fishing)
