bait
A bait is supposed prey that is used to attract an animal .
As a rule, bait is something that can be eaten or at least fakes it ( artificial bait ). Depending on the task, it is used in connection with an interception system or laid out in the animal's habitat. Baits are also used to attract animals to watch.
The term is often used in connection with fishing , where the bait is intended to attract the fish to the hook . The English term bait is also used in German for carp fishing.
Baits that had an anesthetic effect on the fish were called mad baits . Recipes for such Toll bait, such as those first released in 1493 fish book of Jacob Köbel be called back to very old traditions in part. Ingredients for mad bait were, for example, the cyclamen (as in Oppian's fishing poem Halieutika, which has been printed in Latin since 1478 ) and the common ox tongue (documented around 1020 in the Latin verse Ruodlieb , which was created at the Tegernsee ) and the fruits of the pseudo myrtle .
A poison bait is a target for the destruction of pests is laid out poisoned bait. Depending on the poison and the amount of poison, symptoms of poisoning occur immediately or a few hours after ingestion. There are also poisons, such as the coumarins or thallium used as rat poison , which can lie a few days between the time of ingestion and the appearance of the first symptoms. They are used because rats would no longer accept bait in the vicinity of dead conspecifics.
If handled improperly, poison bait can also endanger animals other than the target species if the bait or the animals that have died on it are eaten. The baits are therefore often offered in forms that only the desired species can access if possible, against rats and mice in boxes or suitcases with very small access openings (bait boxes). In addition, they are made inedible for humans with bitter substances such as denatonium benzoate , in order to prevent accidental ingestion. The use of poison bait is regulated by law in Germany.
A vaccination bait is a piece of food with a vaccine for an oral vaccination . Vaccination baits are used, for example, to combat rabies .
