Artificial bait is an imitation of various nutritional animals used in fishing , such as. B. small fish and insects. They are equipped with hooks and are mainly made of metal, wood, plastic or synthetic materials. Artificial baits are drawn through the water ( spin fishing ) or offered floating on the water (e.g. fly fishing ). As a result, they stimulate hunting fish and induce them to bite . Artificial baits are mainly used to catch predatory fish . However, there are also artificial maggots and worms for catching coarse fish. Artificial baits do not always imitate the outer shape of a prey animal. Often they just arouse the fish's instinct to hunt and aggression. This is similar to a cat toy provoking a cat to attack, although it does not look like a mouse or bird.

Types of lures

Rows from top to bottom: Twister, Jigs, Shads
  • Blinkers are the simplest of artificial baits. They only consist of a metal sheet that staggers through the water when the fishing line is pulled. This method has proven its worth especially for pike fishing, as the spoon mimics a small, sick fish. But perch can also be caught with this method if the indicator is not too big.
  • Spinner (also spinner blade) (derived from the English to spin - to turn ): A metal blade that rotates around an axis when pulled and by the resulting stimuli (pressure waves) tempts predatory fish to bite . The lateral line organ (sense of distance) of the fish is stimulated by these pressure waves.
  • When dragging through the water, wobblers imitate sick fish with rocking movements, which are attractive prey for predatory fish. Wobblers (derived from the English to wobble - to tumble ) have a diving blade, the shape of which results in the movement and is one of the decisive factors for the diving depth.
  • Surface bait, e.g. B. Poppers are characterized by the fact that they float on the surface and do not submerge when drawn in. By briefly breaking through the water surface, air bubbles can be sucked in under the water, which lead to a popping noise. This is to get the predatory fish's attention.
  • Jerkbaits (from the English to jerk - jerk, jerk ) are similar to large wobblers, but do not have a diving shovel. There are both floating and more or less rapidly sinking models. The delightful movement must be conveyed to them by jerking the bait. A distinction is roughly made between two possible movement patterns: the horizontal left-right movements with the sliders and the vertical sawtooth patterns with the divers or pullbaits. The movements are soft to jagged depending on the type, shape and guidance.
  • Pirk are artificial baits that are used in sea fishing . In the sinking phase, they imitate a sickly fish and are usually provided with a triplet as an attachment point.
  • Soft baits are made of soft materials, in the past often PVC with a plasticizer, recently more environmentally friendly materials such as silicone have been used. The best-known types are called Twister (worm-like) and Shad (fish-like) or soft jerks , which are becoming more and more popular, especially for drop shot fishing .
  • Stunt flies are made of feathers, fur and other materials that are tied to a hook shank using special tying techniques. Artificial flies are mainly used in fly fishing and mostly imitate fish or insects found in and around the water.
