Pirk

The pirk is an artificial bait for sport fishing .

In most cases, it is made of shiny saltwater-proof metal and has a bite point (triplet). There are pirk in a wide variety of sizes, from a few grams for shallow water fishing to several kilograms for deep sea fishing. In terms of shape and color, the variety is almost inexhaustible. Mostly a fish shape is imitated. The pirk is supposed to generate pressure waves under water and thus attract the attention of the target fish and stimulate the bite.

After ground contact, the angler pulls (picks) the bait up about 1 m again and then lets it spin down again. Another guidance method is to move the pirk in mean water, i.e. between the water surface and the sea floor. Most fish bite in the sinking phase because the shape of the pirk imitates a sickly fish. A bite in the sinking phase can be recognized by the slack line. Now it is necessary to tension the line and set a strong stop. The impact of the pirk on the hard seabed also attracts the fish through the noise and the generated pressure wave.

The main prey when fishing with pirk is cod , but also saithe , ling fish , mackerel , gurnard and pollack . Around 80% of all cod are captured by pirking in the Baltic Sea , the rest with natural bait.

In the meantime you can also see more and more anglers fishing with rubber fish and jig heads weighing up to 400 g . This method is more successful than pilken on some days.
